18-06-2007The first Blast Furnace is 109 years old.

Just 109 years ago the Blast Furnace № 1 of Ilyich Iron & Steel Works produced its first pig iron. This happened in 1898, in the night between 14th and 15th of June. That year American BF engineers Julian and Walter Kennedy delivered disassembled Blast Furnaces to the Nikopol-Mariupol Joint Stock Company. It took 15 months for the brothers to assemble the Blast Furnaces. The height of the two foundations for the Blast Furnaces was four meters. Mr. Mikhail Kurako, that time the superintendent of the BF Shop, and many scientists considered the Blast Furnaces as a state-of-the-art equipment.

The productivity of the first Blast Furnace was twice as much as the largest blast furnaces in the South of Ukraine. The Furnace was several meters higher than the low Belgian and German blast furnaces. In the first half of 1898 the Blast Furnace produced more than 1 million 250 thousand poods (16,38 kg) of pig iron.
